The Marriage in Christ seminar is an outreach of a lay, Christian community called the People of Praise.
It was developed by married men and women who have experienced a renewal of Christian life in and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Our experience of the power of the Holy Spirit and the importance of a vibrant, supportive Christian community is reflected in every aspect of the Marriage in Christ seminar.
People of Praise is an international, lay, covenant community consisting of 3,000 women, men, and children, in 24 locations around the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.
The People of Praise originated in South Bend in the late 1960s when men and women from South Bend and the University of Notre Dame experienced a renewal of Christian life through the charismatic renewal, or Pentecostal, movement. This renewal has brought powerful new experiences of the Holy Spirit to more than 600 million people since the beginning of the 20th century.
We are a family of families and singles and come from all walks of life: homemakers, car mechanics, medical doctors, computer programmers, real estate agents, Catholic and Protestant clergy, teachers, professors and so forth. We are active members of many Christian churches: Lutheran, Catholic, Methodist, Episcopalian, Pentecostal, Baptist. We live in cities, suburbs, and rural areas, in ordinary neighborhoods; we live in our own homes, and sometimes in households where families and unrelated singles share life together.
What unites People of Praise members is a covenant, a lifelong mutual pledge of love and service to fellow community members and to the Lord; our covenant resembles permanent commitments made in Christian religious orders and in other intentional communities around the world today. In addition to fostering lay community life, we also seek to be a resource center for spiritual renewal, marriage, family life, education, Christian unity, and building a world more conducive to Christian living.
