Praying it Through

In England during the mid- eighteen hundreds, thousands of orphans became homeless. Many died of starvation and England lacked the economic resources to overcome her children’s dilemma.

History reports that during seasons of painful desperation, God speaks to the hearts of His people and moves in extraordinary measures as His people begin the simple act of prayer.

Such a man was George Muller. His life and ministry was blessed by awesome manifestations of God’s power and provisions through prayer. As God moved upon His heart, being a man of action, he engaged God through fervent prayer. He wanted to help England’s children.

When a donation of L3, 000 was received in early 1851, Mr. Muller believed God was confirming the matter and determined within himself to pray it through. Mr. Muller was not the type of man to give up easily as his life testifies. When confronted with a burden, he recognized the value of praying persistently until an issue with God was settled in his heart. As he prayed God responded again and enough funds were provided to eventually build a number of housing units for the children.

Prayer became the tool of his trade. One morning, the tables were all set for breakfast however the cupboards and the cash box were bare. The children were waiting for their food and Mr. Muller, lifting his voice in prayer, simply said, "Dear Father, we thank thee for what Thou art going to give us to eat." There was a knock at the door. It was a local baker who said, "Mr. Muller, I could not sleep last night. Somehow I felt you didn’t have any bread for breakfast, and the Lord wanted me to send you some. So I got up at 2:00 am and baked some fresh bread and here it is." Mr. Muller thanked the baker and praised God for His care. Then there was a second knock at the door. It was a milkman whose cart had broken down right outside the orphanage. He had come to unload his milk and give it to the orphans so that he could get his wagon repaired!

During his ministry Mr. Muller never asked for money or accumulated any debt whatsoever. He learned not only to pray, but also to never give up praying.

He learned to pray it through!!!!

The spiritual principles driving prayer seem to be somewhat evasive to most believers; after all, prayer is the loneliest of all Christian disciplines.

Prayer lacks fireworks, flair and appeal.

Answer to prayers like those of George Muller and others like him require a formable level of commitment. These prayers aren't of the ‘now I lay me down to sleep’ variety. No, these prayers coupled with faith literally move mountains.

For the believer there is wonderful opportunity and promise in God’s word.

James 5:16-18 proclaims a truth to every believer that, "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit."

"The prayers of Elijah brought the dead to life, turned a nation back to God, commanded nature and brought fire from heaven! Yet the New Testament places him alongside of us as a man of like nature with us. Instead of placing himself outside the sphere of humanity, in the marvelous results of his praying, it points to him as an example to be imitated and as inspiration to stimulate us (E.M. Bounds...)."

Oh that the believer would behold this pillar of prayerful, persistent and obedient example of God’s powerful movement through prayer. And not be overwhelmed-- but inspired to a renewed zeal toward this spiritual exercise.

That we as a people would rise from the despair that so easily overtakes us and press toward the mark that is set before us and be not again entangled in prayerless living. But looking beyond hopelessness to a New Hope through prayer. This is a promise --those who embark upon this journey, who choose this course, will never, ever be disappointed. Let this be your quest. That those needs that seem beyond all hope, become the focus of a relentless pursuit on your part. Praying it through until the spirit of God clearly speaks to you heart proclaiming "It is finished."

I stake my very life on the truth that those who deny their fleshly passions and pursue God through prayer will discover a presence nestled in the loving arms of our savior that goes beyond human description.

" But when the heart, on its knees, moves into the awesome presence and hears with fear and wonder things not lawful to utter, then the mind falls flat, and words, previously its faithful servants, becomes weak and totally incapable of telling what the heart hears and sees. In that awful moment the worshiper can only cry OH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " (A.W.Tozer, Born After Midnight).

Was Mr. George Muller really any different than you or me?
